Joe's pencils show the original mask design, which was changed before the art was sent to me for inking.
A random collection of material from comic artist Kevin Nowlan. Started with the best of intentions, but like most other efforts, doomed to perish from neglect as soon as the novelty wears off.

Pencil scan for Frankenstein Jr. and the Impossibles
I posted the inks last summer, but couldn't locate a copy of the pencils. These things have a way of turning up when you're no longer looking for them.

Arak and Captain Carrot
From 1982. Believe it or not, this a published piece. I think it accompanied a Roy Thomas interview in the Comics Journal. I really didn't have a clue about inking back then.

Flatiron Joe logo art
A couple of years ago I was asked to design a logo for a NYC bar in the Flatiron district. I don't really do logo designs any more but just this once I made an exception. It was a lot of fun but the place closed not long after I finished the work. It's a shame, because I was looking forward to grabbing a beer and a burger there the next time I made it to the city. You'll occasionally see some of these preliminary sketches mis-identified as Goon prelims.

Monsters in the Closet: Animated?
How'd I miss this? I really gotta get out more often. Click on the link to see the Batman Black and White Motion Comics "Monsters in the Closet" episode. My favorite part is when Batman pokes the little reject with his finger. That shriek is very close to the sound I heard in my head when I drew that panel. Update: Now the video is embedded below, thanks to a helpful hand from Scott Peterson (the talented writer and editor, not the bad fellow who looks like Dean Cain).

The Spectre: Legends of the DC Universe 80-page Giant #1
One of the oddest collaborations you're likely to see in a comic: A script by Peter David and Bill Mumy, Steve Ditko pencils and my inks. The note at the top of the art says "4" but this was actually page 1.

Teen Titans
I think we all knew I'd have to do a finished version of this old, rejected card sketch... didn't we? I'm so predictable.

Action Comics Weekly #639 cover sketch
I thought I'd already posted this cover but I guess I changed my mind when I couldn't find a copy of the pencils. Fortunately, the long forgotten preliminary sketch showed up on eBay this week and it's tight enough to get the job done. It's not my auction but you can see it here, for a few more hours at least. The seller very kindly shared a larger scan of the rough with me so please reward him with some ridiculously high bids.

More Gil Kane...
...with a little Sergio Aragonés thrown in for good measure. Here are a couple of pages from Mark Evanier's Fanboy, issue 2. I think Gil did all the layouts, then Sergio inked his figures before the pages came back to me to ink whatever remained. It was funny seeing how well Gil mimicked Sergio's style, creating a far more seamless blend than I would have expected.
