I think this was drawn around 1980 or '81. I couldn't even sign my name right back then...

A random collection of material from comic artist Kevin Nowlan. Started with the best of intentions, but like most other efforts, doomed to perish from neglect as soon as the novelty wears off.
Hi Kevin, I'm so pleased this has come up because your signature has changed dramatically over the decades and I haven't seen you talk about why that is anywhere before. Could you comment here?
ReplyDeleteI used to like your stuff around this time, in Comics Journal. But you have got sooo muuuch betttter
ReplyDeleteI agree with Alan. I really liked your work from the get go, the Amazing Heroes and Comics Journal stuff being among the first things I saw of yours. Little by little I'd see more and more. Amazing Heroes #17 came out with your Supergirl cover--"Criminey sakes, he "paints" too-!?" "Grimwood's Daughter", Moon Knight, Outsiders Annual--loved it all. By the time Amazing Heroes #115 (Wonder Woman painted cover, Swimsuit Issue) came along, you'd become this mysterious art "monster" and have been showing off ever since... ;-) (Thank you, Kevin!)
ReplyDeleteI haven't changed my signature much in the last decade or so but early on I kept trying different approaches, hoping to find one that looked a little better than that earlier scrawl.
ReplyDeleteAs far as getting better at drawing is concerned, I'd like to console myself by thinking about how much I've learned since those early, inept drawings, but it's still very common for me to look at something I drew a week ago and cringe. I know one artist who always waits a day or so before he lets any art leave his studio so that he can correct the mistakes that become more obvious after a good night's sleep.
