Batman and Solomon Grundy: Wrightson pencils, Nowlan inks

Page 19. I love the way Wrightson draws trees.

  1. You're not alone in this.

I noticed it said unpublished. Can you give some context around this project/page of why this is so? Like what project it might have been?

  2. It's probably at least ten years old now. Ron Marz wrote the 22 page story, Bernie Wrightson pencilled it and I inked it. I don't know why it hasn't been published. I don't even know what book or series it was for.

I remember DC saying that they didn't want to put it out as just a regular comic-size one shot. But when we tried to put together a companion piece to go with it we were shot down.

Am I detecting a slight Totleben influence in the rendering on Grundy's arm?

  4. I think I see what you mean, but no, I wasn't trying for it. That's just the way I interpreted his pencil lines.

Gotcha. Yeah, having seen (I think) a majority of your published work, I'd never seen any Totleben influence before, but given the more horror-like nature of Grundy, I thought it possible.

  6. It's stuff like this and what was it...that Bill Sienkiewicz Batman thing that really boggle my mind. I'm sure there are hundreds of others like it that never were published.

And in that they could come out with an 80 page giant of the Greatest Unpublished Works of All-Time!

  7. In 2009 DC published a Moench/Kelley Jones a shelved Batman story called BATMAN UNSEEN as a 5-issue miniseries. There may be hope that the Marz/Wrightson/Nowlan masterpiece may yet be published.
