I haven't been posting enough old stuff lately, mainly because I'm running out of material. And most of the new work I've been doing is embargoed in one way or another. But I found this pencil sketch from either 1987 or '88. I was reading a biography of Will and Ariel Durant and was charmed by the story of Ariel showing up for their wedding ceremony in her roller skates. She was only 15 at the time so I guess it's less charming now.

No, it's still charming. A wonderful drawing.
ReplyDeleteI knew Ariel was substantially younger than Will, but I didn't know she was 15. And they lived and worked together for a long time. Shows that there's an exception to every rule. Nice drawing.
ReplyDeleteCute drawing actually. Nice to hear that reading something was a catalyst for inspiration.
ReplyDeleteAnd wonderful to hear new work is coming out at some point!
A woman being married at age 15 may be disturbing by modern puritanical standards, but it's not something particularly unusual or inappropriate during the more civilised past, certainly not in the Ukraine from which Ariel came. If more Ariel Durants could result from such alliances, the world would be a better place indeed. The Durants were a phenomenal couple, worthy of admiration and more.
