The small Johann figure in the lower left corner was almost eliminated in the inks. Mike put it in there as a joke, but didn't intend for it to survive to the final version. I was happy when our cajoling worked and Mike reluctantly agreed that it'd be okay to leave it in.

I sure do like inking Mike Mignola's pencils. This series was published in 2008.

Mike Mignola thinks he can't draw women.  I agree with him on many things but he couldn't be more wrong about this.  But that's why he did just a rough sketch for Liz on this cover and asked me to finish her when I did the inks.

The new BPRD Black Goddess trade paperback is out.  Check it out, it's a terrific book. They included a nice scan of the pencils for this cover but none of the sketches I sent them so  here they are:

The evolution of a cover, from Mike Mignola's sketch to intermediate layouts to final pencils and inks.  The three panels at the bottom were dropped when they didn't work on the cover of #1.  I liked them but Mike thought they were getting in the way.
