Superman: Blood of My Ancestors, page 24

I think this page is a good example of Gil Kane's talent for composition. If you've ever tried to coordinate the movement of dozens of characters in one drawing you'll probably appreciate what he did with the layout in that bottom panel.

Hellboy cover: thumbnail sketch to inks

For me, the challenge on this cover was coming up with an interesting image that didn't spoil any of the surprises in the story. I'll try to post some images from the interior pages later.

Hellboy

The cat's out of the bag so I might as well link to the news story. It goes on sale in April. Script by Mike Mignola, pencils, inks, lettering and colors by yours truly. A terrific, weird, sad and funny 24 page Hellboy story plus this cover. Yippee!

Monsters in the Closet: page three

These pencils are incomplete. After inking the lettering, I inked the portions of the art that looked okay, then finished up the background, pencilling and inking in more or less one step. It would have been better to finish all the pencils at once but I often resort to this tentative, wishy washy approach to keep things moving and avoid getting hung up on the details that I'm not sure about.

Batman and Solomon Grundy: page 17

Bernie Wrightson pencils, my inks, Ron Marz script. Drawn in the late '90's and published earlier this year in Batman Hidden Treasures #1. Sincere thanks to Mark Chiarello for rescuing this story from the DC flat files.

Batman Confidential #28, page one

This third issue in the "King Tut" series was a delight to work on. José did full, finished pencils and spotted the blacks. As you can see here, those strong shadows in the last two panels all came from José. I was just along for the ride.

Authority: Lost Year #12, page 4

Pencils by Jerry Ordway. I think I was reasonably faithful to the pencils throughout the story but the editor warned me that the smoking female character in panel two is very young – maybe even a teenager? – so I tried to youthify her in a couple of places.
