Rough sketches for an old Defenders commission

Looks like this one was done in 2003. I couldn't find a scan of the pencils so I'm showing three stages of layouts along with the final inks. It might seem like a lot of preliminary work but sometimes it takes me several revisions to get everything worked out and it's always better to make those mistakes in the sketching stage than it is when you're doing the finished art.

  1. Kevin, I have been following your blog for a month or so now. I don't know how I came across your work, but I have enjoyed seeing your updates in my google reader. Thanks for sharing your process pics. I am currently working on my own comic project which will be previewed for the first time in Baltimore in October. You are for sure an inspiration for how I plan on approaching my indy comic's cover art. Thank you.

  3. Interesting you changed the pose for Dr. Strange. I really like the extended arm. I see why you did change the pose though. Not like he was casting a spell in the raised arm pose. But it still looked neat.

  4. i absolutely LOVE the energy in your roughs!

I wish it was acceptable to tell a sequential story like that...finished schminished- you could get by on sketch sequentials and still accomplish more than most.

  5. And I own the other prelim for that commission! Gerry and I seem to have very similar tastes, but what's not to love about Kevin Nowlan Dr. Strange pieces - pencil, prelim, inked - I lov'em all!!!
