Dr. Doom art for Marvel Card

Another piece for the old Upper Deck VS series. By the way, it's not my auction, but the sketch is being sold here on eBay.

This was drawn in 2004 for the Upper Deck "VS" series of Collectible Cards.

Alfred Upper Deck card art

I like the first sketch but it was too tall for the square format.

Preliminary sketches for Legion of Superheroes painting

Big group shots like this aren't easy to compose. Here are some of the prelims, more or less in the order they were drawn. The final pencils and painting can be seen here.

Batman card art

Another piece from the Upper Deck series. They asked for a "1970's" Batman so I tried to draw the costume details a little like the Neal Adams and Irv Novick versions.

Star Sapphire card sketch

I posted the pencils and finished art for this last summer but only recently found this preliminary sketch. You can see the later stages here.

Fantastic Four cards

I think these were drawn for Upper Deck.

The Ventriloquist and Scarface

Yet another DC card for Upper Deck.  Sometimes the drawing is easy but finding the right angle is a challenge.

Teen Titans card sketch

I misunderstood the instructions when Upper Deck asked me for a Teen Titans group shot. I did a layout with the characters as large as possible in the miniscule space allowed on the card.  Turns out they wanted something more like the final design that I showed back here.

Atom vs Chronos DC card

No pencil scan, but a tight layout.  For the finer details of the watch mechanism I scanned a photo and combined it with the drawn image in Photoshop.  Gil Kane drew Chronos with Richard Nixon features back in the '60's but, as you can see in my note, I wasn't sure if that's what Upper Deck wanted.  I don't remember if they nixed the idea or if I did it on my own.

Wonder Girl art for a DC card

The final version of this piece was included in the color section of the Modern Masters book but I found scans of the the thumbnail sketch and the pencils so I thought I'd show how it evolved.

Aqualad art for DC card

Sketch, inks and color for another of the DC  cards.  I think I drew all of the original Teen Titans from the 1960's.

Superman card art

This one seems to be a little Mignola-inspired. I like the lighting effect but the flat colors didn't go over very well with a lot of the card collectors who wanted "paintings".
