Preliminary sketches for Legion of Superheroes painting

Big group shots like this aren't easy to compose. Here are some of the prelims, more or less in the order they were drawn. The final pencils and painting can be seen here.

Batman card art

Another piece from the Upper Deck series. They asked for a "1970's" Batman so I tried to draw the costume details a little like the Neal Adams and Irv Novick versions.

Yet another DC card for Upper Deck.  Sometimes the drawing is easy but finding the right angle is a challenge.

Teen Titans card sketch

I misunderstood the instructions when Upper Deck asked me for a Teen Titans group shot. I did a layout with the characters as large as possible in the miniscule space allowed on the card.  Turns out they wanted something more like the final design that I showed back here.

The final version of this piece was included in the color section of the Modern Masters book but I found scans of the the thumbnail sketch and the pencils so I thought I'd show how it evolved.

Aqualad art for DC card

Sketch, inks and color for another of the DC  cards.  I think I drew all of the original Teen Titans from the 1960's.

Superman card art

This one seems to be a little Mignola-inspired. I like the lighting effect but the flat colors didn't go over very well with a lot of the card collectors who wanted "paintings".

Don't try this at home

You know, this is putting an awful burden on someone who just draws stuff with little thought of who – if anyone – might see it or even if it's worth being looked at more than once.

My first reaction was, "No, if I'd known you were going to do that I'd have done a better drawing!"

The artist did a nice job though... I like the addition of the Bat Signal. If anything, I think he improved the drawing.

Legion of Superheroes Painting

Looks like I was wrong when I said that the Vision card was the only painting that I did for the Upper Deck VS Card series. I also did this large piece for the Legion series box.
