Here's another page where the inks don't look much like the pencils but at least this one was planned that way from the start. Alan Moore script, Dave Johnson layouts, John Nyberg background inks and my finishes. I don't know if you can see it in the pencils, but Dave drew a Bart Simpson head on the guy in the bottom panel.

It's interesting to see how much you brought to this page. The best part is the grumpy expression on the old man in the car window. I love the disapproving glare!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Dav, the guy in the car is awesome. I love how you 'Nowlan-ized' the art, seemingly little touches, like the shading of the car tire, adds so much to the overall beauty of the page.
ReplyDeletethis issue and the others you did with johnson are in my stack of inspiration on my desk. one of my favorites!
ReplyDeleteMr Nowlan, were those pencils considered to be "finished"?
ReplyDeleteI don't remember... but they were probably considered layouts, not finished pencils.
ReplyDeleteI remember looking at this particular page in college wishing I could draw that well :)

And your wish came true! Now you can draw circles around Dave and me!
