"Superman: Save the Planet" cover art

Here's a very exaggerated, almost cartoony take on the Man of Steel, from a 1998 one-shot.  The Superman figure was printed on a clear plastic overlay and the background was the front page of the newspaper.

  2. I'd never seen that either, very cool! Sometimes I think people start to forget that this is an art form, not photography, and that cartoony exaggeration is part of the freedom of the form! Do you think the idiot who gave you the "perspective lessons" a while ago would approve of this one? :) Beautiful piece, were the colors yours too?

  3. I have a theory: The exaggerated proportions are easier to accept if the rendering is stylized as well. For some reason, when we put lighting that looks naturalistic or pseudo-realistic on a drawing, we expect the proportions to be very life-like as well. Realistic lighting seems to go better with conventional proportions, even though I like to mix them up from time to time.

No, I didn't do the colors, but I like 'em. There's just that one little area around the mouth that doesn't quite look right but I think everything else works well. DC re-used this image for something recently and I asked if I could tweak the colors but it wasn't possible, even when I offered to do them gratis.

  4. actually the pose that was inked is throwing everything off. the one in pencil is more acceptable, to the eye, because it lines up with the head and left arm. your rendering just makes the akwardness of the "readjusted" legs stand out. but what do i know.. it's still a great piece.

    peace out

  5. But he doesn't look like he's flying in the pencilled version. I'm sure that's why I changed it. Oh well...
