Inked version of Gil Kane Green Lantern drawing
I traded some pages to Gil for this pencil drawing years ago when we were divvying up the art for Superman: Distant Fires. It's a real treasure because there just aren't that many un-inked pencil pieces by Gil out there. A while back I decided to print out a blue line copy and do an inked version.

Green Lantern Gallery cover: Gil Kane pencils
From 1996. Gil's pencils were lost in transit but he'd made a copy so I traced the image onto a new board and did the inks.

More Gil Kane...
...with a little Sergio Aragonés thrown in for good measure. Here are a couple of pages from Mark Evanier's Fanboy, issue 2. I think Gil did all the layouts, then Sergio inked his figures before the pages came back to me to ink whatever remained. It was funny seeing how well Gil mimicked Sergio's style, creating a far more seamless blend than I would have expected.

Green Lantern pin-up
This one is a mystery to me. The note says it's for something called a "3D Gallery" but I don't know if it was ever published. DC put out a book called "Green Lantern 3D" in 1998 which sounds about right but the GCD doesn't mention this piece. Pencils by Gil Kane.

Legend of the Green Flame: Layouts
I should have posted these roughs when I showed the pencils and inks back in October. I'll make it easier for you by re-posting the pencils. Everything else can be seen here.

Legend of the Green Flame
The Phantom Stranger confronts Superman and Green Lantern. Who in the world could prefer a dopey, dated, turtleneck and gold medallion over a simple black necktie? In the script, Neil Gaiman specifically asked for the tie, but one of the other artists on this project ignored him and drew the turtleneck. So... I had to change my art. Nine years later and I'm still annoyed. Yes, it's true, there are no limits to my pettiness.

Metamorpho #6: cover sketches, pencils and inks
I don't know why I drew a normal hand on the second sketch, after I'd already worked out the giant pliers/clamp gizmo on the first sketch.

Yet another DC card: Golden Age Star Sapphire
I didn't even know that the original Green Lantern had his own Star Sapphire. DC couldn't scrape up any reference material for me so I called on the fine folks at the GCD and they helped me out with some scans from their collections.

Another DC card

I'm not sure if this one was ever published. It looks like this poor guy didn't even have a name, other than "Old-timer". He was the Guardian of the Galaxy who tried living as a human during the Green Lantern / Green Arrow series that Neal Adams and Denny O'Neil did in the early 70's.
After I did the drawing I stumbled across the fact that Gil Kane's original model for the Guardians was David Ben-Gurion, former Israel Prime Minister. If I get a second chance to draw him -- or them -- I'll try for a better likeness.
Oh, and someone is going to have to remind me: one of these days I need to share my trick for drawing accurate footwear.
