Superman #614 cover

This one is from 2003. Okay, I know that at the time, they were calling this "The Adventures of Superman" but since DC had continued the numbering from the one and only original Superman title that I read as a kid and because I didn't understand the temporary name change in the first place, I'm going to call it Superman.

As some of you know, the dog in the lower right is my old buddy Sam. He's still with us but he's feeling all of his 13+ years and he's slowing down a bit. But aren't we all?

Sharp-eyed readers may also notice my meager tribute to my favorite comic artist in the background.

This was probably my favorite of the dozen or so Superman covers I did that year.

  1. Pretty funny to look at this cover now. Like a twisted trip down Wisteria Lane. Still a fun one.

And is that supposed to be Bob O.? Never noticed that in the past.

  2. No, don't look at the faces... I was talking about the hardware sign.

  3. Wow, amazing to see the steps as the piece progressed!!! I absolutely adore your Superman. He's powerful and iconic looking yet still has that awkwardness of a person growing into himself. You really captured the personality of the character with this one. Definitely one of my favorites from this run...

  4. Nice of you to say so, Lee... but I can think of twenty guys who draw him better than I do. Now that I've seen Wednesday Comics you're at the top of that list. Congratulations on the beautiful work!

  5. Ahh...didn't even notice the sign Kevin. I figured you had it in you to attempt a drawing of Bob himself.

And for Lee, I second the compliments on Wednesday Comics. Inspiring.

  6. I love all your Superman covers and this is a winner, but for me it was AofS 621 that was the total knock-out, Superman surrounded by bug children. The combination of humour, composition and structure, - and in Superman - his strength and helplessness. Well it's been my wallpaper for four years now and it still makes me smile every day.

  7. Yeah, I like that one too. I seem to do better with the oddball stuff than I do with the heroic images.

  8. I think it's great that you have all of these amazing scans to show us the progression of a piece from start to finish. Thanks for sharing, Mr. Nowlan!

  9. Kevin,
Did you color this piece? I'm a fan of coloring the line art, but only when it's necessary. If it was a DC minion, then we'll tear it apart...if it was you, I'm shutting up now.

  10. Yes, I did color it. I wouldn't trust anyone else to color Sam correctly.
