Secret Origin of Clayface, Mike Mignola pencils
I wrote a lengthy recollection of this project's sordid history here, but it looks like I've only posted one of Mike's pencilled pages so far. This one is scanned from a bad photostat so if I come across the scans I made directly from the pencils I'll update this post. But don't hold your breath.

Ahh.....this is essentially my dream combination. I love your combination on Hellboy but that was limited to covers. This is the best because of the sequential work...and the fact it has Batman doesn't hurt either. Love the final approach and execution you did for the last two panels. You added your own little flair to the page.
ReplyDeleteOnly thing I wondered was not if you were intimidated but rather, did you feel a sense to ink it more Mignola current style or the style it was drawn in (his old rendering shading)?
I wasn't necessarily trying to make it look like Mike's current style but he made it clear that he wanted me to make a contribution in the inks and not ink it in an approximation of his style the way I did on Aliens: Salvation. So I looked for places to add some rendering or firm up some details wherever I could.
ReplyDeleteGotcha. I figured that was the case. The 5th panel was a great example where it was like a bastard child of Mignola, Nowlan and a splash of P. Craig in there! :)
ReplyDeleteYou and Mignola make a wonderful combination... the Aliens story you did together is wearing of from re-reading in my library :D... I'm sure everyone asks this, but... any chance this story will ever see the light of day? Along with the Solomon Grundy one, for a bigger package? I can't believe anyone would have those jewels unpublished!
ReplyDeleteThe Solomon Grundy story is supposed to get published sometime soon. And this Clayface origin finally was printed a few years ago, in a Batman Villains Secret Files book, but you really had to dig to find it.
