Details magazine ad supplement, page 2, 1997

Looks like I was already budgeting my time when I did the thumbnail.  The second panel with all the monsters would make this a "2 Day Page".  The angle of the last panel was determined by the need to sell jeans for Kenneth Cole.

  2. So when you knew the second panel was going to be full of monsters, did you have a specific vision for what those monsters were going to look like or just reach down in the twisted part of the brain and start crafting these demons? Each seems to fit the tone of the setting so it be nice to not have to struggle coming up with ideas.

  3. They were improvised on the spot. I had the positions of the two foreground monsters worked out in the layout and knew the one on the left should either be very short or crouching so that his head wouldn't be covered by the large balloon (see, it pays to do the lettering first). The rest of the party was drawn right on the board with little or no preliminary work. I almost cut a few corners and put them in partial silhouette like the Benny Goodman orchestra but since I'd budgeted a little extra time for this page and enjoyed drawing them so much I went for more instead of less.

  4. Seeing your art has always inspired me to become a better artist, but lately you make me want to be a better letterer too ;) This is great stuff.
