Minimum Wage back cover
This piece was for issue #2 of Bob Fingerman's amazing semi-autobiographical book Minimum Wage, in 1995. The last image is scanned from a copy of my color guide.

gorgeous cover. I especially love the background characters and shadows and colors on the main guys nostrils.
ReplyDeleteWow my God hehe great art always Kevin your ideas take me great inspiration to learn ^^.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! Please explain what kind of material did you use for colouring this guide. And if it´s not much trouble, i´d like to see any page of sword of Azrael, i remember that your inking was masterful. Geetings.
ReplyDeleteA tough issue to find: I managed to pick one up in Ashland, OR. What I love about this piece is that it really displays your stylistic versatility which is on a par with Wood's.
ReplyDeleteHoly cow, you remember where you bought one comic all these years later?
ReplyDeleteSebastián, I used markers and colored pencils for the color guide. I'll have some Azrael material up soon.
Kevin, I've always loved this cover. It blends your charming cartoonist side with your more realistic mastery of lighting and inking.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Hil. As you know too well, I sometimes have trouble suppressing the cartoonist in me.
ReplyDeleteBe sure to check out tomorrow's post!
Good stuff and I'm still looking for a nice copy!

Every day I look at this piece and am stunned you found the time to do something so spectacular for my comic. It's really one of my favorite pieces of art. Gorgeous. I'd never seen the sketches, though. Super cool to see the process. Thanks again, Kev.
ReplyDeletePS: Sorry I never found my way back to you at the NYCC. I got lost in the crowd. Someday we'll catch up good and proper.
I'm glad you were happy with the results. I felt bad that you sent me a big stack of Brooklyn reference photos and I finally just made up a building instead of drawing from the photos. I just couldn't find what I was looking for so I faked it.
ReplyDeleteThat NYC show was fun, even if we only got to speak for a minute or two. Hope we get back there again before too long. We seem to run into each other every 15 years or so. Guess I'll see you in 2024!
If I wasn't happy with the results I'd be the world's biggest idiot. Funny, I don't remember sending you photos. You made the right choice, of course.
ReplyDeleteHopefully we'll cross paths before 2024!
