Alpha Flight #52 cover art

Here's the cover for the very next issue.  This time I was handling pencils, inks and colors, most likely from a sketch by Carl Potts.  We used to call these "poster shots", no specific situation or setting, just a generic shot of the heroes.  I was really relieved when I saw how the colors printed.  I tried to get some modeling into the figures with flat color and white highlights but with the old coloring system we wouldn't actually see the colors until they were printed.

  1. Wow Kevin, this stuff is great. Keep the art coming. BTW, was there a particular reason why you signed the piece "Kevin Nowlan" in the pencils and on the inked version it changed to just "Nolwan"?

  2. I didn't even notice that. I was probably just being lazy.

  3. I love the Guardian's right forearm. Also, is Aurora striking a Gil Kane homage pose? All great stuff.

You never like your Wolverines, Kevin. Yet, they're always great.

  4. That Guardian shot looks almost exactly like a drawing of Superman you've done since that. Not that it is improper, just reminds me of a Superman pose.

    Fun stuff!!

  5. Another my special one. I loved this cover really much.In Italy your Punisher "Garbage"(David Ross pencil) was printed on black & white, i remember i was astonished, because artist like you, Hughes
or Davis/ Farmer are so complete on b/w that
you don't need colour. You are better without color.IMHO.

  7. All your work is simply amazing. I consider myself an old fan of yours, and having the chance to take a look at your work in porgress is certainly a privilege. I have a spanish TPB edition of "The Gehenna Stone Affair"...any chance to see some of those covers here? Man, those were GREAT...

  8. I posted cover art for Wolverine 12 and 13. Use the "Search Blog" feature in the upper left corner and you'll see them. Just type in "Wolverine".

  9. Nice piece. And yeah, the colors came out great. It was tough back then to get the seps guys doing any rendering correctly. Turned out great.

  10. What's the story with Puck's right arm? It looks seamless in the final product but we can tell from the original art released in the IDW Artist Edition that it looks like it were added later. I'll guess the reason was that Alpha Flight went to Direct Market distribution only starting with issue #52, meaning the corner UPC box was not required anymore, so you filled in his arm later. Something like that?
