Strange Tales #16: Cover art

This cover was fun; a big, grotesque monster and two helpless heroes.  My editor, Carl Potts, sent me a sketch with notations.  From there, I did the pencils, inks and colors.  It got weirder every step of the way. My copy of the inks is a little light so I'm also showing a scan of the original art.

  2. This may be too much to ask, but how likely is it for you to post original art like this? Seeing these older, yellowing pages are a true learning experience and have a charm that a clean b&w cope doesn't match.

Also, did you color all of these Strange Tales covers yourself?

  3. It's not too much to ask, I just don't have many of those older originals in my hands anymore so unless I can scrape up a scan or stumble upon one online like I did here, I won't be able to oblige.

Of the Strange Tales covers that I drew, I think I colored all but the first two. The editor, Carl Potts, was always very agreeable.

  5. Thanks! I'll miss a day from time to time but so far I've been keeping up with it okay.

Spain is a beautiful country. I've only been there once but I loved it. Especially the fresh seafood tapas!

  6. Zip-A-Tone. Hurray!!! I always loved when you integrated that into your covers. Always done with a purpose.

In retrospect, was Carl your longest single editor run? Just seemed like from these to the Moon Knight stuff, Carl's name always popped up. I know the stages of doing work for one editor anymore is lost but seems like Carl had a big, big influence on your work. Obviously since he helped get you into the big show.

  7. Carl seemed to inherit a lot of Al Milgrom's titles when Al went back to freelancing. Denny edited Moon Knight but Carl inked some of my pencils, before he became an editor.
