From 1988. They weren't used for very long, but I also drew the new logo and the (awkward) small Doc figure in the upper left corner.

A random collection of material from comic artist Kevin Nowlan. Started with the best of intentions, but like most other efforts, doomed to perish from neglect as soon as the novelty wears off.
great cover!thanks for posting it,do you have a scan of the corner box art?
ReplyDeletedid you do the colours also for this ?
I've always been curious, Kevin.. What does the "C" in "K.C.Nowlan" stand for?
ReplyDeleteI haven't been able to find the art for that little drawing or even a good copy of it.
ReplyDeleteYes, I did the color guide for this one.
The "C" stands for Conway.
Always loved that cover. In fact it sticks in my minds eye as one of those defining images for the characters. Great stuff.
ReplyDeleteThe window element adds an unusual "X" design, which is then minimized by the logo placement.
ReplyDeleteThat's funny, I always thought the "C" stood for crotchety. ;)
Today it does, but not so much when I was a baby.
ReplyDeleteAwesome!

Hey Mr. Nowlan when you submit these to the editors, which phase do you send to them first? the sketch, or rough pencil?
ReplyDeletepeace out
I think I probably sent a sketch that was a little more finished than the one I'm showing here. Then I sent in a copy of the pencils.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite covers. Looks awesome in black and white !!!
ReplyDeleteAwsome art, as always. I'm curious about Dormamu's head, his "face" doesn't appear till the final B&W image, I don't know, like it wasn't your intention to draw it that way (maybe you initially wanted to finish it only with the coloring?). Just curious.
ReplyDeleteYou're exactly right. I wanted to create the flame effect with just color but Carl wanted the black parallel lines. If I were more skilled, I'd have made his flame head the light source for the whole scene but that was (and probably still is) beyond me.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great cover. Your version of Dr. Strange is always a favorite of mine. Thanks for sharing these
