The final version of this piece was included in the color section of the Modern Masters book but I found scans of the the thumbnail sketch and the pencils so I thought I'd show how it evolved.
Shana Tova!
A random collection of material from comic artist Kevin Nowlan. Started with the best of intentions, but like most other efforts, doomed to perish from neglect as soon as the novelty wears off.
This is one of my favourite pieces from the MM book, it's funny, just a little bit deviant, charming, quirky and totally original - plus great use of colour. I really like the Superman "Buggin' Out!" cover too for all the same reasons.
ReplyDeletecool pic, great shoe art too.
ReplyDeleteI really like your art! congratulations!
ReplyDeleteKevin, wasn't there a secret about drawing shoes?
ReplyDeleteI was going to write about it but Dave Johnson jumped in and blurted out the punch line to my joke before I could explain.
ReplyDeleteAnd it's not so much a secret or even a trick, just an odd habit: When I have to draw detailed shoes like you see in this Wonder Girl piece, I go to my closet and pick up a few, pose them on my drawing table and draw from "life". They're not hard to draw if you have a good "model" sitting right in front of you.
I might seem silly, but why fake something that's so easily accessible. Dave and I used to make fun of one artist who looked like he was having a hard time drawing trousers. "Doesn't he OWN a pair of pants?"
And just to be clear, I don't do this every time I draw a shoe, just when they're prominent or I need some specific details.
