Night Force 12 cover art 1997
I'd been hearing for years that Gene Colan's pencils were difficult to ink. That might be true in general, but this cover was a piece of cake. My only quibble was with the colorist who did his or her best to over rule us on the light source. Gene clearly placed it above Baron Winter's head but the colorist thought it should go below.

Wow! Thanks for posting this one. I was actually screwing up the courage to request it. It's great to see your version alongside the pencils. I can usually spot your style from down the street but this one you inked so straight that I can barely tell it's you and not Colan himself. Adding to my confusion was the fact that your signatures ended up underneath the UPC code.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's a shame... "Colan and Nowlan" has a nice ring to it.
ReplyDeletei thought for sure the shadows under the cheeks and eye brows was a gimmie, as far as where the light was coming from. thanks for sharing Mr. Nowlan.
ReplyDeletepeace out
Sadly there are lots of bad colorists in this industry, who often get the last word on the art.
ReplyDeleteTHIS is my idea of a team supreme!

ReplyDeleteI could possibly understand the confusion since there's - what appears to be - a huge cast shadow above and behind Winters - usually meaning a light source below and in front of the figure.
ReplyDeleteJust my worthless 2cents.
