This was for a very patient fellow named Steve Gettis. He has a sharp little gallery of literary-type faces drawn by mostly funny-book type artists. You can see it here.
I started with a loose pencil and sharpie sketch, then drew on a sheet of gray matt board with black, gray and white pencils. Then I finished it off with some watered down black gouache. Finally, I used a big sable brush loaded with black ink for the hair.

Stunning!
ReplyDeleteHi Mister Nowlan. This is not the right image to post under, but I just found your blog : Wonderful art here. I am doing a small printing run french magazine, A tribute to the Spirit. I'd like to know if it would be ok with you to print the rough and pencil pieces you posted a while ago : The cover you did for the Spirit
ReplyDeleteHere is a link to pieces I received

Thanks, Nick!
ReplyDeletePhilippe: Sure, I'd be fine with you printing them, as long you take care of the usual legal stuff like permission from DC and the © holder, etc.
Thank you, that's very kind of you

Just in case : would you have a higher res pic of the pencil (and the rough)? (if you do not I'll print the one you posted)
ReplyDeleteThanks again
Philippe

Beautiful piece Kevin. I love the light and shadows. Makes him pop so nicely.
ReplyDeleteThanks Kheang! It was great seeing you and Jody in Baltimore. I'm still laughing about the washing machine in the pile of leaves.
