It takes a lot of work to make something look this simple: Dalgoda B&W story page one

I'm only showing a portion of the false starts for this page; mostly involving panel three.  I also had a lot of trouble with the first panel.  I was laboring to set up a sight gag; the ferocious, aggressive Dal we see first is actually a standee.  The real Dal is getting his makeup applied.  I tried every way I could think of to make it clear but I still think I fell short.  Still, I like the page and the rest of the story went much smoother.  Hope those Zip-a-tone screens don't look to strange on your monitors.  This was for A1 #4, in 1989.

  1. Sup Kevin?

Well i don't think you did, it's pretty clear the idea on panel three, the stage assistent holding the thing and Dal getting some powder(s'at it, the word?) hehe.Aaaand, this one really shows your influence over Mignola.

Thanks for sharing as always pal,

  2. Great Great stuff. I was never aware of this story. Now I have to go look for this in the comic bins ! Also, panel 3 is fine.

  3. Before I forget. GREAT lettering on the title. For some strange reason, it reminds me of "Toth's" signature. Maybe its the stark contrast of B&W?

  4. Yeah, all the lettering is Toth inspired. I stole the "Y" that he used on a couple of romance stories when I lettered the balloons.

I should have mentioned that this is a 12 page story and it's one of my favorites. Jan writes Dal with so much humanity, which is only ironic if you're not a dog owner.

  5. Oh, and I doubt this had any influence on Mignola. As far as I know, he's never even seen it.

  8. Thanks, Dominic. I've never been too sure how many people saw it. Jan and I still own the rights to it so maybe we'll get it reprinted somewhere some day.

  9. This was in A1 right? Man, to this day, this is one of my favorites. Was there a Moebius Metabaron story in that issue too? Those A1 books were really fun. Really great to see this art again. Was this ever published in any thing else?
